Spotlight on JRF Alumna Kendra Gaither

Periodically, we will feature a Q&A with a member of the JRF "family" we think you should know. This week's spotlight is on Kendra Gaither . A Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholar from 1992 to 1996, Kendra currently serves as Chair of the JRF Mid-Atlantic Regional Scholar Advisory Committee. She is also a lifetime member of the JRF Alumni Association. Kendra began her career in international affairs at the U.S. Department of State where she spent more than 10 years as a career diplomat, specializing in international economic and trade issues in Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa. A term member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a recipient of the Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship, Kendra is currently the Executive Director of the Center for International Policy & Innovation at Carnegie Mellon University.

Rachel Robinson International Fellows Named for 2013

Nine JRF Scholars have been named recipients of the prestigious Rachel Robinson International Fellowship (RRIF). Established in 2008 with a generous grant from the Sheila C. Johnson Foundation, the program is designed to promote and support international work and study abroad opportunities for Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholars.

JRF Scholars and Alumni Inspire Youngsters at Citi Field Kids Day

For the 4th year in a row, Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholars and alumni served as mentors and tour guides to middle and high school students visiting Citi Field for an afternoon of inspiration and baseball. On April 25th, 200 youngsters from the United Neighborhood Houses of New York (UNH) were part of the Citi Field Kids program, launched in 2009 by Citi, the Mets, UNH and the Jackie Robinson Foundation to inspire and motivate New York City students to reach their full potential.

JRF Luminary Gregg Gonsalves Elected Co-Chair of Foundation Board

Gregg Gonsalves has been elected co-chair of the Board of Directors of the Foundation. Gregg, an alumnus of JRF (Class of ’89) and a board member of the Foundation since 2006, is an investor with Integrated Capital LLC, a leading, hotel-focused, private real estate advisory and investment firm. Prior to joining Integrated Capital LLC, he was a Managing Director in Goldman, Sachs & Co.’s Real Estate Group and Mergers Leadership Group, and was named Partner in 2004, responsible for Goldman’s Real Estate Merger & Acquisition Business.

Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholars and Alumni Take Part in Nationwide Jackie Robinson Day Ceremonies

Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholars and alumni were on the field in the nation’s stadiums as Major League Baseball (MLB) and the teams hosted the annual Jackie Robinson Day event that pays tribute to our beloved namesake Jackie Robinson. All of the players, managers and officials of 18 of the 30 teams wore the number 42 on Monday, April 15th, the 66th anniversary of Robinson’s heroic entry into the major leagues that broke the color barrier in baseball and forever changed the social landscape of the country. Other teams “followed suit” on Tuesday, April 16th. Forty JRF Scholars and alumni participated in pre-game ceremonies celebrating “JR Day”.

Joseph J. Plumeri to Chair Jackie Robinson Museum Campaign

The Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF) has announced that Joseph J. Plumeri, global business leader and serving member of the Foundation board, will chair the Jackie Robinson Museum capital campaign to build a museum commemorating the life and legacy of a true American hero. In addition, Plumeri has made a personal pledge of $2 million.

Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholars Join First Lady at Special “42” Screening and Panel Discussion

Six Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholars were among those attending a special White House screening and panel discussion of the movie “42” on April 2. Hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama and accompanied by Jackie Robinson Foundation President and CEO Della Britton Baeza, JRF Scholars Rashawn Davis (Georgetown ’14), Adrienne Edwards(Penn ’13), Kyle Hutzler (Yale ’14), Jamille Jamison(Howard ’15), Kyle Nichols (Howard ’16) and Danielle Pingue (Princeton ’13) joined 80 students to watch the movie and listen as “42” writer-director Brian Helgeland, cast members Harrison Ford and Chadwick Boseman and JRF Founder Rachel Robinson shared their insights about the film’s genesis and the enormous impact the iconic Jackie Robinson had on this nation’s history.

Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF) Scholar and Yale Junior Kyle Hutzler is making his voice heard nationwide. The Huffington Post news website has featured Kyle’s entries in its Washington, D.C., section. Kyle’s latest blog offers “8 suggestions to save the Washington Post”. Writes Hutzler, The Post's chief failure is that it has steadfastly remained a metropolitan newspaper in a world in which only national or local papers will remain viable.

JRF Bestows Coveted Awards on Four Trailblazers

At a star-studded gala held at the Waldorf=Astoria on Monday, March 4th, the Jackie Robinson Foundation presented its coveted 2013 ROBIE Awards to a group of distinguished leaders in the field of business, education and entertainment. The iconic event paid tribute to individuals who embody the humanitarian ideals of Jackie Robinson, and raised funds for the Jackie Robinson Foundation. JRF provides generous, four-year college scholarships, graduate school grants, and comprehensive mentoring services to academically-distinguished minority students with financial need and leadership capacity.
