The Jackie Robinson Foundation Announces First Round of New JRF Scholars

In its first round of awardees for the 2012-2013 academic year, The Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF) has selected 56 new Scholars in its Class of 2016. The Foundation provides $7,500 annually over four years to college students who demonstrate both leadership potential and financial need. This new class will join 109 JRF undergraduate Scholars and 13 graduate Fellows, currently supported by the Foundation beginning in the 2012-13 academic year.

JRF Scholars on Set of Movie

The production of the movie "42" is in full swing with shooting in Atlanta, Georgia. A few JRF Scholars have the unique opportunity of working on the set rotating through various areas of the production. Scholars Lauryn Nwankpa, Aun’Joli Ferguson, Khyara Harris, Kendall Putmon, Joel Boyd, Michael Tabb and Neima Patterson are serving as interns and are learning about many of the facets of movie-making.

JRF has announced the new class of Extra Innings Fellows for 2012. The EI program was created to help highly motivated JRF Scholars overcome one of the biggest challenges to their careers–the cost of advanced professional or graduate training. Fellows receive up to $10,000 per year.

JRF Mourns the Death of Painter Leroy Neiman

LeRoy Neiman, the artist known for his impressionistic works of some of the world's best-known sporting figures and events, died Wednesday. He was 91. Although his paintings captured everything from U.S. presidents to jazz musicians, it was Neiman’s unique paintings of the sports’ world, that brought motion and emotion to the canvas. Neiman donated a limited print of one of his most popular sports' painting. It featured Jackie Robinson stealing home.

JRF Scholars Take Part in Peace Initiative in Northern Ireland

Under JRF’s RRIF Program, with funding from The American Ireland Fund, four Jackie Robinson Scholars traveled to Northern Ireland on June 7th to attend a 2012 session of the Summer School at the Clinton Centre for International Peace in Enniskillen. Building Prosperity in an Age of Austerity Georgetown University sophomores Rashawn Davis and Anna-Danielle Forsyth, UCLA sophomore Ajwang Rading and Howard University graduate Makeda Njorge are sharing their own business start-up ideas and strategies with the panel of experts who are providing feedback and recommendations.

JRF Says Farewell to Longtime Auditor Ron Benjamin

The Jackie Robinson Foundation said farewell to its longtime Auditor Ron Benjamin who recently retired from the New York office of Mitchell & Titus, a member firm of Ernst & Young Global Limited. Benjamin began auditing the book of the Foundation in nearly 35 years ago. “Ron was not just our auditing partner,” said Vice President/COO La’Tonya Johnson. “He has been a true friend of the Foundation, providing critical advice in the development and implementation of our financial policies.”

Sharing the Jackie Robinson Story with Citi Field Kids

JRF Scholars and Alumni took part in Citi Field Kids, an educational and motivational community-based initiative for New York City school students developed by Citi in collaboration with the Jackie Robinson Foundation. Edwin Arnes, Koryalys Edwards, Mercedes Hobson, Andia Winslow, Linnetta De La Cruz represented the Foundation and talked about Jackie Robinson’s barrier breaking role in baseball and civil rights.
