As Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholars head back to campus, we thought we’d share just some of the rich summer experiences they have enjoyed, as they continue to make us proud and confident in the leadership they will go on to provide to our communities and country.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) sophomore Joshua Millings traveled to Hong Kong to take part in a research project in physics and cosmology. Millings was a member of MIT's TERSAT (Trapped Energetic Radiation Satellite) team where he helped to prepare for an annual competition sponsored by the Air Force Research Labs.
D'Andre Quinerly, a junior at the University of Massachusetts, traveled to Guatemala to gain a deeper knowledge of globalization and sustainability issues. He is majoring in Public Health Science.
Closer to home, Vanderbilt University sophomore Langston McElroy and George Washington University senior Alyse Stone interned at Northrop Grumman Corporation getting firsthand experience in the corporation's Loads, Dynamics, and Thermal Department. Northrop Grumman, a JRF sponsor since 2005, also provided the pair with opportunities to learn about the actual aircraft design process.
Davidson College sophomore Rashaun Bennett interned in the Office of Charlotte, North Carolina Mayor Anthony Foxx, a job that was interrupted when Foxx was confirmed as U.S. Secretary of Transportation. While in Mayor Foxx’s office, Bennett researched transportation and economic initiatives.
Scholars and alumni also put their networking skills to work this summer.
JRF sponsor Prudential hosted JRF Scholars and alumni at a reception on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange; New York-based alumni gathered at the city's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture for “First Friday”, a popular monthly event featuring live music and extended viewing hours of the Schomburg galleries. "It's thrilling to hear each year from our Scholars and alumni as they recount their summer experiences,” said JRF President and CEO Della Britton Baeza. "We are so pleased to know that their time away from school is filled with purpose, skill-building and hopefully some fun!"
