In addition to the year-round individual mentoring, JRF Scholars also participate in our two multi-day conferences. The “New Scholar Orientation” for first year JRF Scholars, and the “Mentoring and Leadership Conference” for all Scholars. These two conferences provide a platform for scholars to learn critical skills for success in college and beyond, as well as, to continue to develop their support network.
Mentoring and Leadership Conference
The hallmark event of the JRF program is the annual Mentoring and Leadership Conference (MLC). The Foundation provides travel to and housing in New York City for all current JRF Scholars so they can attend four days of developmental workshops, career exploration seminars, meetings with key public and private sector leaders, cultural and recreational outings and practical life skills classes.
As important as the programs JRF creates for the Scholars is the time JRF Scholars spend networking and inspiring each other with stories of their personal successes and challenges, public service endeavors and other experiences. The Weekend culminates with JRF Scholars attending the Jackie Robinson Foundation’s Annual Awards Dinner.
The Jackie Robinson Foundation’s New Scholar Orientation
The Jackie Robinson Foundation’s New Scholar Orientation (NSO) is a three-day conference that offers workshops and activities focused on the high school to college transition for incoming JRF Freshmen Scholars. The workshops focus on preparing for the college journey, positioning for academic success, living a healthy college lifestyle and understanding the financial aid process. In addition, new Scholars get the opportunity to bond as a class to provide support to each other as they go off to their respective schools.
