58 College Students Join the Ranks of Distinguished Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholars
The JRF Scholar Class of 2021 Represents 47 National Honor Society Students and will attend 40 Colleges and Universities Across the Country
Della Britton Baeza, President and CEO of the Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF), announced the selection of 58 new Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholars, comprising the JRF Class of 2021. Chosen from 4,700 qualified applicants, the group of college freshman met a high threshold of academic achievement, financial need and leadership potential. Each proudly assumes the role of ambassador of the rich legacy of American icon Jackie Robinson and his wife Rachel Robinson, who founded the minority scholarship program in 1973, the year after Robinson’s death.
JRF Scholars receive up to $30,000 and participate in a four-year comprehensive mentoring program that includes practical life skills and leadership training through the Foundation’s 42 Strategies for Success curriculum; one-on-one adult and peer mentoring; career guidance; and internship and permanent job placement. The Foundation’s 44-year old, hands on approach has resulted in a consistent, nearly 100% graduation rate.
“I take great pleasure in welcoming to the JRF Scholar cohort 58 extraordinary, highly motivated young men and women,” said JRF President and CEO Della Britton Baeza. “At a time when student voices are leading the call for our society to fully embrace diversity and inclusion, to practice greater humanitarianism, and to promote collaborative work environments, these dynamic young people will help to move those agendas and positively impact their campuses, their communities and workplaces across all industries and disciplines.”
The incoming class of JRF Scholars represents 23 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and will attend 40 colleges and universities across the country. One-third of those selected graduated in the top 5% of their class with eight Scholars selected as either valedictorian and salutatorian of their high school senior class. With the addition of this year’s class, JRF supports 242 college Scholars and graduate school Fellows at 105 colleges and universities.
