JRF Scholar Profile: Dominic Williams
November 17, 2015 - Scholars
JRF Scholar Dominic Williams is junior, pre-med at Arkansas State University, pursuing a degree in Biological Sciences and Chemistry with a minor in Spanish. Sponsored at JRF by former three-time All-Star Major Leaguer Vernon Wells, an Arkansas native, Dominic recently completed The Clinton International Summer School in Northern Ireland where he participated in an intensive scholarship program designed to promote entrepreneurship, leadership and community engagement and prepare students to advance positive change and economic development in their home communities. His participation with the Clinton Summer School program was made possible through JRF’s Rachel Robinson International Fellowship program.
“There are certain moments in your life that are defining,” said Dominic. “They shape the person you are and the direction your life is headed. I have had three of these moments in my life; attending Arkansas Governor’s School, my first JRF Mentoring and Leadership Conference, and attending the Clinton International Summer School. These experiences inspired my work with social justice and my personal spirituality, and served as a muse for my poetry.”
With Dominic passing the halfway point as a JRF Scholar, he reflected on what the experience so far has meant to him. “In two years, I have made unbelievable friendships, gained mentors and mentees, and recently experienced my first trip abroad, all thanks to JRF… I’m continually encouraged in seeing so many ambitious young people of color. I can’t imagine who I would be without this foundation.”
Aspiring to enter the medical field, Dominic spent last summer using his certifications as phlebotomist and Emergency Medical Technician in his hometown’s Forrest City Hospital.
He is also focusing on his passion for social justice through a startup he conceptualized while at the Clinton Summer School entitled “Navigating Black America.” Through using social media platforms, Dominic plans to bring exposure and insight into the diverse experiences of Blacks in America.
Dominic is making sure Jackie Robinson’s maxim, ”A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives,” continues to be an important part of his life.
