Support that Makes a Difference: Deloitte
July 10, 2015 - Sponsors
For the past 11 years, Deloitte has been a strong supporter of the Jackie Robinson Foundation’s mission, sponsoring a total of 16 JRF Scholars. Five of the JRF/Deloitte Scholars are currently enrolled in school while 11 others have since graduated. Deloitte’s support has not ended there, however. As a global organization that employs approximately 200,000 professionals in 150 countries, it has helped make possible JRF’sAnnual Awards Dinner, supported the Foundation’s jazz festival in Los Angeles, and even hired JRF Scholars.
Byron Spruell, Vice Chairman and Chicago Managing Principal for Deloitte LLP, is so supportive of the Foundation in fact, that he joined the board of directors in 2009. “Deloitte supports the Jackie Robinson Foundation because we so strongly believe in its mission of advancing access to higher education to underserved populations,” he said. “In addition to my role on the JRF board, Deloitte supports five scholars each year and has hired a number of JRF scholarship recipients into our U.S. firm.”
Mr. Spruell continued, “a particularly distinguished JRF alumnus, Rachel Evans, is based in our Chicago office, and has done a remarkable job transitioning from academic life to beginning a career with Deloitte’s marketing organization. She’s an amazing example of how the support JRF offers – from scholarships to leadership development training to mentorship to community service roles – are so critical in positively shaping the lives of these talented young scholars.”
Deloitte takes corporate citizenship seriously and ‘practices what it preaches’ by promoting a stronger economy and society by serving the public interest, building a culture of purpose, and inspiring leadership in others – within and outside the company.
