Jackie Robinson was a four sport star at UCLA, lettering in baseball, basketball, football and track and field. JRF is also a star in the eyes of multiple sports leagues, teams, players and owners.
With the recent gift of $50,000, the NBA joins longtime supporters Major League Baseball (sponsoring two freshman Scholars this year and an additional 21 Scholars) and individual baseball teams the Los Angeles Dodgers, Baltimore Orioles, St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks and Miami Marlins in championing JRF’s mission. Sitting on the JRF board are NFL Dolphinsowner Stephen Ross and Sheila Johnson, owner of the Washington Wizards, Mystics, and Capitals. The NBA’s Cleveland Cavalier’s also provide financial support. Sixteen current and retired pro athletes, including Derek Jeter and his Turn 2 Foundation, form JRF’s Pitch 42 program; professional athletes whose support helps provide tuition, mentorship, leadership training, internship placement and more to our Scholars during college and beyond. Joining Jeter are: Michael Bourne, Royce Clayton, Carl Crawford, LaTroy Hawkins, Orlando Hudson, Edwin Jackson, Derek Jeter, Adam Jones, Michael Jordan, Matthew Kemp, David Price, Jimmy Rollins, CC Sabathia, BJ Upton, Justin Upton, Vernon Wells, Jerome Williams, Dusty Baker, Yu Darvish, Jason Heyward, Torii Hunter, and Brad Zeigler.
Jackie Robinson was an ardent supporter of causes he believed made a difference in the human condition, both during his playing days and afterwards. JRF thanks the leagues, teams and athletes for supporting the Foundation and our mission to help academic scholars in their pursuits. JRF Scholars may be the next MLB or NBA star, but they may also be the next doctor, inventor, analyst, nonprofit founder, engineer, journalist or teacher – thanks to support from the sports world.
