May 11, 2012—On April 15, 2012, the nation paused to commemorate the 65th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking baseball’s color barrier. In tribute to this monumental moment in baseball and civil rights’ history, all Major League Baseball players and coaching staff wore Jackie Robinson’s iconic uniform number, “42.”
The St. Louis Cardinals, On the Run at Mobil and Anheuser-Busch are teaming up for the fifth consecutive year to support Jackie Robinson Day and raise money for the Jackie Robinson Foundation and Cardinals Care. Jerseys worn by Cardinals players on April 15th have been hand signed and are being made available to fans through a raffle. By purchasing raffle tickets from On the Run at Mobil stores during select dates in June, fans will have a chance to win an autographed jersey along with two tickets to the St. Louis Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Dodgers game on July 24th. Winners will be presented with their jersey as part of a special on field pre-game ceremony on that day.
Over the past four seasons, the Jackie Robinson Day Jersey raffle has raised over $100,000 to benefit the Jackie Robinson Foundation’s local scholars’ college education efforts and Cardinals Care.
The raffle program was made possible by a partnership between Wallis Companies Inc., the Regional Franchise Developer for On the Run at Mobil, the St. Louis Cardinals, Anheuser-Busch, Nestle Waters and the Jackie Robinson Foundation. About The Jackie Robinson Foundation:
Established in 1973, the Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF) is the nation’s premier education and leadership development program. In addition to financial assistance, the Foundation equips its scholarship recipients with a comprehensive set of support services including mentoring, career guidance and practical life skills, resulting in a nearly 100% graduation rate, more than twice the national average for minority students. The over 1,400 JRF alumni are both leaders in their professional fields and consummate ambassadors of Jackie Robinson’s legacy of community service. This academic year (2011-12), JRF is providing more than $3 million in scholarship assistance and program support to 208 students across the country.
About Cardinals Care:
Cardinals Care, the team’s charitable foundation, is celebrating 15-years of supporting children. Since 1997 Cardinals Care has invested nearly $18 million in “Caring for Kids” both on and off the baseball field. Cardinals Care has provided nearly $11 million in grants to over 800 non-profit youth organizations and built 19 youth ball fields in local disadvantaged neighborhoods. Cardinals Care also runs Redbird Rookies, a free baseball league for kids who otherwise might not have the opportunity to play. In addition to providing all the uniforms, gloves, bats, balls and other equipment needed for each team, Redbird Rookies also provides extensive off-field support in the areas of health, education, mentoring and the cultural arts for each of the nearly 4,500 kids who participate in the program each year. Last year, Cardinals Care established the Joplin Recovery Fund with over $200,000 in fan donations to help the thousands of Joplin area children recover from one of the most destructive tornadoes in American history.
